SHINE is a project that Terre des hommes has implemented in Bacau county, one of the poorest regions in Romania, in the past 3 years, since 2017 until 2020. SHINE means Support for Health, Social Infrastructure and Education ) and its beneficiaires are 11.000 of the children in the area. Within this project Tdh has made 45 investments in school infrastructure, together with its partners and with financial support from Fondation Botnar -Switzerland.

Children have been involved in the project since its begining, as meetings with children were organized so they could express their needs. After deciding what to build in their community, the children were helped by Arhipera Association and by TDH team of facilitators to create scale models of the playing grounds, sport fields and school furniture. Then TDH team tried to put in practice exactly what children suggested. From January 2018 till March 2020, TDH team and its partners (city halls, companies, NGOs) has built and/or bought necessary equipments, from sports fields, to sanitary groups or buses and educational equipment.

Starting with the summer of 2018, the TDH facilitators worked together with the children from the communities, helping them to develop their own rules of using the investments, taught them to use in a responsible manner all the equipments and facilities. On the one hand nonformal education is one means to ensure the sustainability of the project, and, on the other hand it was a means to offer psycho-sociological support to children.

Let the children SHINE!Let the children SHINE!

The SHINE project has been implemented by Terre des hommes Foundation with the support of Fondation Botnar (Switzerland).
