The International Organization for Migration (IOM) revealed that 1,283 individuals died trying to migrate to Europe across the Mediterranean Sea in 2019 — 44% of the deaths confirmed during the same period in 2018. While the number of recorded deaths has fallen, the number of shipwrecks is on the rise, and records indicate that hundreds of lives have been lost on 'ghost boats', but their deaths may never be fully verified. 'Each year that these deaths continue means more families live in limbo, not knowing whether a relative is dead or alive', said Frank Laczko, Director of IOM’s GMDAC.
