UNHCR together with the funding from the EU has been running KEDU, an informal school on Kos, Greece for children refugees living there. Xenia Passa, a protection officer with UNHCR explained “it is important for refugee children to find normalcy in their life and a safe environment outside Pyli, in which they can learn and interact with others”. The school is for children 7-18 years old, with youngsters attending classed in the morning and older children in the afternoon. KEDU was opened in April and until now around 400 children attended classes there. Children have the opportunity to learn math, Green, science, arts and crafts, history, English, sport classes as well as Arabic. Some of the children then go on to attend regular schools in Greece. Last year around 8,000 asylum-seeking children started attending public schools in Greece and it is expected this number will be even higher this year.
