In order to slow down coronavirus, many people decide to stay at home, but as a result of the quarantine, the number of cases connected to domestic violence can arise, says NANE and PATENT Associations in Hungary. In China, there were three times more reports in February then last year. Social and economical changes can also make the situation worse: the abusive man isolates his partner in order to have more control.
Because of the changes in systems of institutions, abusive men are less afraid of being called to account. Stress and vulnerability caused by problems at workplaces can also lead to problems.
NANE and PATENT call attention to the importance of keeping contact with abused women in the period of isolation. They also ask the authorities to consider the risks of violence when they decide about their regulations.
Violence against women is a systemic problem. According to common data, 50 women die owing to domestic violence in Hungary. In order to call attention to this problem, Mérce publishes the list of murdered women and children each year.
