Irish Times published the letter of Tanya Ward, The Children’s Rights Alliance Chief executive welcoming the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Katherine Zappone’s call for the ratification of the Second Optional Protocol to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. This protocol is dealing with some of the worst offenses against children, like sexual abuse, child prostitution, abuse, trafficking. Children’s Rights Alliance is satisfied to see that this protocol is one of the most important issues for the Irish government for the 2019. By ratification of this protocol Ireland is sending the message that offenses against children will not be tolerated and at the same time is setting a high standards in this field. According to this protocol, every offence against children will be punished. Also, the main part in these cases will be a voice of the victim. First step in making changes, and protecting children has already been taken. The government included “one- house model” in Galway in their latest budget. This is meant for children that have been sexually abused. Children’s Rights Alliance is hoping for this project to be spread across whole country, in order that protection could be given to everyone. Ratifying the protocol shows that Ireland is ready to join other EU State Members and committed to follow the regulations from the protocol.  “It is something we recently advocated for in May of 2018 when we met with the UN Special Rapporteur on the Sale and Sexual Exploitation of Children, Maud de Boer-Buquicchio, during her visit to Dublin”, said Tanya Ward.
