Many online child sex crimes using Facebook and Twitter 'not recorded by police'

23 Sep 2016

The Telegraph reports that many online sex crimes against children, including rape, are not recorded by Scottish police. The report found that although social media sites are one of the key vehicles used by sex criminals to groom children, with 11.4 to 17.5% of all sex crimes containing a “cyber element”, most of which were social media or dating site based, many of the crimes were not recorded. Due to the transnational element of online sex crimes, police had not listed crimes committed by those abroad. This raises questions for policing and child protection in the digital age.
