The Protector of Citizens, Zoran Pasalic, in January 2019. addressed the Ministry of Culture of Serbia with the aim of contributing to the realization, protection and promotion of the rights of the child, based on his own initiative and also on citizens' complaints. In his letter, he criticized the relation of certain printed media towards children who were victims of violence or their image was abused in any way in the sensationalist media releases. As we have recently witnessed the publishing of content that insults the honour, dignity, reputation and privacy of the child, there are also examples of publishing information on personal and family circumstances of children or allowing children to be recognizable in media contents, and all for increased sales of newspapers. This can be a huge problem for the child and his family, and it is also a direct violation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The letter lists the clauses of the laws that have been hurt, and the Serbian Ombudsman calls on the Ministry of Culture that it is necessary to amend and change the Law on Public Information and the media, and that it is necessary to prescribe the appropriate sanctions or additional competencies of state authorities in cases of violation of obligations and prohibitions prescribed by this Law.
