'Nobody has any right to discriminate against you based on your race or ethnicity. Ever.' Luke, a 15-year-old activist.
Racism can be defined as a form of discrimination and/or bullying of a person based on their race and/or ethnicity.
Coming from the Caribbean, Luke and his family immediately became part of the black minority group in England. Being called names at a very young age brought him close to anxiety and depression. Kids at school teased him for not being white and associated him with what they called 'black'. After years of bullying, Luke decided to ask for help. He started taking medicine and got counselling. For a long time, he wanted to be white in order to be accepted and integrated into his community. But after a while Luke realized his skin color is nothing to be ashamed of. Since then he uses others’ hatred to remind himself to be proud of who he really is. Luke believes that regardless of race or ethnicity everyone deserves to be treated equally. He strongly encourages those who suffer from discrimination to ask for help and talk to someone. Also, just by sharing information and donating to charities, awareness can be raised and racism can be eliminated.
