When thinking about how refugee people choose their destination country, European policy makers rarely draw conclusions informed by the discussion with refugee people. Instead, they made their assumptions which based on a survey among refugee people do not match reality. The interviews with more than 250 refugees conducted in 2002 and 2015 offered significant insights into how they made a decision on which destination country to choose. In most cases, smugglers, family, friends and cultural connections were the key factors as well as luck. Interviews show knowledge about the asylum systems or financial support they would get had very little to do with choosing a destination country.
