In recent years, the EU as a whole has experienced a substantial increase and a subsequent steady decrease in the number of people arriving. The Asylum Information Database (AIDA) by European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE) has published a comparative report as an update to ECRE’s analysis of reception systems in Europe following the decrease in arrivals of refugees and asylum seekers.

The asylum seekers who obtain protection status face problematics such as severe barriers to move out of reception centers, finding new accommodation, high rent prices, so they find themselves residing in reception facilities for asylum seekers for prolonged periods.

This comparative report focus on reception capacity management highlighting the varying pressure on the asylum systems, as well as the implications of the continued residence of beneficiaries of international protection in facilities for asylum seekers.

Most countries in Europe continue to face a lack of preparation for large numbers of arrivals of refugees and migrants. This report has highlighted some problematics such as inability to offer accommodation to new asylum seekers, and resort to improvised emergency accommodation, deficiencies in reception capacity, etc.
