Being aware that a child-friendly justice system acts as a powerful tool to positively shape children’s life, Tdh Albania and the Centre of Integrated Legal Services and Practices, in partnership with the local organization “Fëmijët e Botës dhe të Shqipërisë” FBSH joined forces to implement a new project, by the name of “Improving access to justice and access to rights of children and marginalized families with a special emphasis on Roma community”. In Albania the justice system in general is not child-friendly and children face manifold restrictions which cause violation of their human rights. Therefore, funded by the European Union with support from UNICEF and Save the Children, this project aims to facilitate access to justice for all children with a special emphasis to some of the most marginalized communities such as Roma children in Albania, and to ensure that children and marginalized families are empowered to benefit from their rights, and request accountability and respect of their rights by state authorities. The implementation of this project will employ various methods taking into consideration its dynamics and diversity of actions combining advocacy activities and partnerships that will be developed with key stakeholders at central and local levels, drafting of different kind of booklets and standard protocols as well as field activities aiming to empower the children and marginalized communities. This project runs from February 2012 until January 2014. It is implemented in the 9 districts of Albania where Tdh is currently implementing its CPSN project. At grass-root level, this project aims to conduct street law activities with groups of children and adults from marginalized Roma communities who are engaged in various informal trainings and awareness-raising sessions, focusing on issues such as civil registration, access to legal services, measures against domestic violence etc., with an aim to ensure they have better knowledge and understanding of their rights and obligations in front of the law, and to provide direct assistance to access these rights through social and legal support.
