Making Desegregation Work!

A Desegregation Toolkit - 2015

details

Publisher:  Roma Education Fund Publication type:  Toolkit / Handbook / Manual

Segregation in education, whether explicit or de facto and whether involving classes or whole schools, remains a serious problem for Roma children hoping to receive a quality education, and a serious source of inequality. In this paper, the Roma Education Fund offers a toolkit for governments and professionals to assist in the desegregation of education, with the goal of achieving education equality and social inclusion for Roma. The toolkit offers various suggestions on how to do this, such as the provision of free preschool education, support services, the gradual and managed shutdown of segregated schools, the inclusion of aspects of Roma culture into education, external monitoring, training of teachers on Roma issues, Roma teaching assistants, raising parental awareness of the importance of education, and more.
