In this brief, the European Union and Council of Europe present the underlying concepts of the ROMED programme, which ran between 2011 to 2013, to train individuals within the Roma community to act as mediators between Roma communities and public institutions to increase access to healthcare, education, and employment. They present diagrams on how "Trojan Horse" mediators and "Community Activist" mediators can become true intercultural mediators, and discuss the timeline of training offered through this pilot programme. It has since been updated into ROMED 2, which aims to use the already-trained mediators to empower Roma communities.
