Meeting Description:

What do we mean by social norms? How do social norms affect child protection?

Social norms can contribute to children’s vulnerability to sexual exploitation and a host of other harms, especially when norms lead to discriminatory practices, gender bias, and social acceptance of violations.

Beyond raising awareness, changing social norms requires improving understanding through a comprehensive and inclusive approach. Crucially, it also means reinforcing behaviours and practices that protect children – and involving children and youth as actors of social change.

In this webinar, Dr. Najat Maalla M’jid presents findings from her mission to Madagascar as a case study to highlight the key role social norms play in child protection. Dr. Najat Maalla M’jid, a medical doctor in Paediatrics, has been involved for the past three decades in the protection of vulnerable children. She served as the United Nations ‘Special Rapporteur on the Sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography’ from May 2008 to June 2014. She works as an Expert Consultant for national and international projects to promote and protect child rights and as a lecturer in Moroccan and international universities. She also founded the non-governmental organization BAYTI, the first programme addressing the situation of children living and working in the street in Morocco.
