Film recommendations

In this topic I encourage you to share your recommendations in matters on films with child protection/education value. We all know that films are a great form of art (even if many times very commercial) that can capture attention and deliver messages, ideas etc.

For now I would like to recommend the movie Boyhood (very short plot - The life of Mason, from early childhood to his arrival at college.) - it is a wonderful film and, besides its uniqueness/innovation in the film industry, it feels so real that anybody with an interest in child protection, education, child-parent relationship etc can learn something.

Here is a review in The Guardian

America

Hello Arina! Nice topic to put to disussion. I've heard that the Boyhood reviews are very high and it is in my list to watch (although movie watching is becoming a luxorous activity recently :) ).

I complitely agree with you that this is a form of art that helps in building understanding on several phenomenons, raising awareness on several human rights topics and why not also serve as role models in cases of heroes. So, in other words, it is a good tool to be used from proffesionals to ilustrate their educative and informative messages.

A couple of months ago I watched the movie America (2009) who centres the life of an abused child who faces challanges of entering institutions, dealing with mental health problmes, dealing with attachment and later on de-attachment from the foster family, the sexual abuse happening within that family from a trusted person and the work that the psychiatrist of the residential centre was doing with this boy.

I strongly recomend it! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1347508/

Hello, today I am going to

Hello, today I am going to see a movie named Mustang, it is nominated for this year Oscar (for foreign movie). It is directed by Turkish-born and French-raised film director Deniz Gamze Ergüven. The film is set in a remote Turkish village (Inebolu, Kastamonu) and depicts life of five young orphaned sisters and challenges they face growing up as girls in a conservative society. The event that triggers the family backlash against the five sisters at the beginning of the film is based on Ergüven's personal life.

Here is about the plot:

Dear Valbona and Vesna,

Dear Valbona and Vesna, thanks for the recommendations! :) I included the films in my "want to watch" list :)

As mentioned in our webinar regarding burnout - movies are also a very good tool in preventing burnout... well, if we don't take into consideration that some movies tackle difficult/serious subjects.

I would like to recommend the recent animated film - The Little Prince - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1754656/?ref_=nv_sr_1 - It is not an exact adaptation of the book, in this film the book is part of a child's life in modern days. It is a relaxing and beautiful animation, first of all for adults. Little children will probably not understand it that well.

This film is especially good for parents and also professionals working with children, and generally it enforces the importance of play for children.

I'd like to recommend a very

I'd like to recommend a very powerful film - Mommy

It is the story of a mother and her violent son with ADHD. Also, the film-making is so real, almost feels a documentary.

„A fair chance - Every child

„A fair chance - Every child has the right to a fair chance in life. But around the world, millions are being left behind – disadvantaged, endangered and deprived of everything they need to thrive. It doesn’t need to be this way. Investing in the poorest children not only improves their lives, but also their children’s lives – breaking the vicious cycle of poverty.          The #FightUnfair campaign asks you to take actions to spread awareness and hold governments accountable for ensuring a better future for every child.“[i]

Another cartoon

Dear colleagues, I recently watched Zootopia (perhaps I'm a little late with that one), and it is a wonderful story about overcoming differences and stereotypes. I'd recommend it to the adult population even more than to children, gives you a lot to think about :)

Fundamentals of Caring

I have watched a movie called "Fundamentals of Caring", it is very nice!

Summary:

The Fundamentals of Caring follows Ben, a retired writer who becomes a caregiver after suffering a personal tragedy. After 6 weeks of training, Ben meets his first client, Trevor, a foul-mouthed 18-year-old with muscular dystrophy. One paralyzed emotionally, one paralyzed physically, Ben and Trevor take an impromptu road trip to all the places Trevor has become obsessed with while watching the local news, including their holy grail: the World's Deepest Pit. Along the way, they pick up a sassy runaway and a mother-to-be who help test the pair’s survival skills outside of their calculated existence as they come to understand the importance of hope and true friendship.

The Fault in Our Stars

The Fault in Our Stars

Two teenage cancer patients begin a life-affirming journey to visit a reclusive author in Amsterdam.

This is a really nice story of teenagers battling cancer, finding first love, facing death and dealing with loss...

Pay it Forward

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0223897/

A little guy starts a movement of 'paying forward', i.e. doing something nice for another person, and the other person should be doing something good for the following person etc.

Genova 2008: Colin Firth is a grieving father who goes to Italy with his two daughters. it is a mysterious film showing the coming of age of the children.

Infinitely Polar bear: I have not seen this movie yet but it is about a father with mental illness (bipolar moodswings) struggling to keep his family together. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1969062/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Grandma (2015) .http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4270516/?ref_=nv_sr_2

A teenager facing an unplanned pregnancy seeks help from her acerbic grandmother, a woman who is long estranged from her daughter.

I have not seen this one unfortunately

The kids are alright http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0842926/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Two children conceived by artificial insemination bring their biological father into their non-traditional family life.

The Pursuit of Happiness http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0454921/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Will Smith plays a struggling salesmanwho  takes custody of his son as is poised to begin a life-changing professional endeavor.

Good Will Hunting: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119217/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Have I mentioned this? The ultimate favourite. Wonderkid who is an uncut diamond, rough on the edges, but finds the right tutor/guardian in Robin Williams. Beautiful story!

Dead Poets Society, another favourite again with Robin Williams bringing out the excited, motivated children from the students in order to learn about poetry. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097165/?ref_=nv_sr_2

Whiplash: a much talked-about movie! A promising young drummer enrolls at a cut-throat music conservatory where his dreams of greatness are mentored by an instructor who will stop at nothing to realize a student's potential.

Again a mentor-student story, quite rough, but interesting! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2582802/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Dolphin Tale 1-2: well, this is more like a kids movie, but again it talks about motivation of children- how experience outside school can teach so much more than a summer-school for a passing grade:-) (it is about a boy and a dolphin, the dolphin losing his tale, the boy saving him, and then helping adults to find a solution to the missing tail:-))

Take the Lead: Antonio Banderas is a dance instructor who goes in a school in adeprived neighbourhood to teach kids dance, and through that help them with their studies and life. It is based on a true story.

Dangerous Minds: Another school story, again in a deprived neighborhood: An ex-Marine turned teacher struggles to connect with her students in an inner city school.

Great topic to discuss, especially for teachers during the winter break :)

I'd like to recommend two great movies - 'A Walk to Remember' and 'Detachment'. Both films are so meaningful. After watching you have so many thoughts and ideas to discuss with kids...I hope you'll like it.
